English version

When Amanda starts at her new school, she starts also with a secret. Before her name was Andrew and she was a boy, but after her sex change operation Amanda is ready to begin her new life as a girl. The first day she meets Grant, who is kind and gentle. Soon they begin to speak more and more and it develops into a relationship. But Grant has his own secrets and Amanda struggles with her feelings for Grant, for what happens if he finds out that she used to be a boy?

I was a little unsure if I should read this book because I wasn’t sure if I was going to like it, but when I was invited to meet Meredith Russo, I decided to read it anyway, because I simply refuse to meet an author without at least reading the person’s book.

However, I was really pleasantly surprised with “If I was your girl.” First I think it’s cool to read about a person who has gone through a sex change operation. All Amanda’s concerns and considerations which she constantly faced were very exciting to read about.

In the book there were some flashbacks to the time before the operation. Those I especially enjoyed reading, because they were very emotional. There was an incident between Andrew and his father, Andrew and one of his friends, etc. It was really well written and I devoured the passage in a matter of minutes.

I also really like Grant, who Amanda ends up dating. He was really sweet and understanding and a lot of other things that I can’t write about without spoiling too much of the story …

It is no secret that Amanda’s father has a hard time accepting her. You find out about that at page ten, but I think it’s really good that the father ends up accepting her, though in a way he has struggled with his feelings for his “little boy” throughout the book. It represented a fairly good ending for me and although there are some outstanding things between Amanda and Grant, I am very happy that she at least made peace with his father.

I think that this is a really good and educational book that has done that I have realized that there are people out there in the world who are not the same as other even though they look like us on the surface. “If I was your girl” opens up to the discussion of “other sexes” and I think that’s pretty amazing.
